Celebrating 30 Years of Donor Impact Across our Community
Gulf Coast Community Foundation was founded in September 1995. By the following year, the first donors had already stepped forward to turn vision into action.
In 1996, these early funds were established with a long-term commitment to the community – designed to grow, adapt, and serve for generations.
Thirty years later, we’re proud to highlight four of those founding-era funds and the lasting impact they continue to make.
Ed and Barbara Strobel Fund
Ed and Barbara Strobel, retired educators from Michigan, were among the first donors to establish a fund at Gulf Coast; creating an unrestricted endowed fund designed to extend their generosity far beyond their lifetimes.
Their first grant supported the construction of a wellness center at Venice High School, setting the tone for a fund grounded in opportunity and community well-being.
Over the past three decades, the Strobel Fund has awarded more than $1.6 million in flexible, unrestricted support to over 110 organizations and initiatives across the region. Their decision to trust Gulf Coast with these funds has allowed support to reach the community where – and when – it’s needed most.
From contributing more than $25,000 to the COVID-19 Response Fund, to supporting Rotary Futures at Venice High School, to helping launch the Digital Cinema Program at Suncoast Technical College, the Strobel Fund continues to evolve alongside the community it serves.
Loveland Fund
In 1996, the leadership of Loveland Center made a forward-thinking decision to create an endowed fund that would provide steady, reliable support for their mission for years to come.
By partnering with Gulf Coast, they ensured not only professional stewardship of the fund, but also long-term protection so that those resources would always be used as intended to serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Over the past three decades, that foresight has paid off. The Loveland Fund has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars to strengthen programs, enhance services, and support the individuals and families who rely on Loveland Center every day.
It’s a powerful example of how an endowment can do more than sustain an organization. It can create lasting stability and peace of mind, allowing leaders to focus on what matters most: their mission.
Women’s Fund
Established by Gulf Coast’s board in November 1996, the Women’s Fund was created to support programs that empower women and girls. From its earliest days, the fund has focused on causes that address inequities, create opportunities, and foster personal growth.
The Women’s Fund is guided by a simple but powerful mission: to promote significant transformation in the lives of women and girls by supporting their economic, educational, physical, emotional, social, artistic, and personal development.
Over the past 30 years, the fund has provided nearly $40,000 in support to more than a dozen local organizations, including Planned Parenthood of Florida, Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC), and Girl Scouts of Gulf Coast Florida. Its grants have strengthened programs that provide safety, education, mentorship, and opportunity for women and girls across the region.
The Women’s Fund is a lasting example of how targeted, thoughtful giving can create pathways to opportunity, build confidence, and help shape a more equitable community for all.
Yates Family Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in December 1996, the Yates Family Memorial Scholarship Fund opens doors to higher education for students in Gulf Coast’s service area. The fund supports students attending vocational programs, two-year or four-year colleges, or graduate school who demonstrate financial need.
The fund was created by Albert Arthur Yates in memory of his son and wife, and it continues to be lovingly supported by his family and close friends. Al called Venice home for more than a decade, and he is remembered for his warm laugh, love of baseball, and deep care for his family and community.
Over the past 30 years, the Yates Fund has helped more than 100 students pursue their dreams, providing a foundation for success and opportunity. It stands as a lasting tribute to Al’s generosity, ensuring his values and love for the community continue to make a difference for generations to come.
Because of donors like you, Gulf Coast can direct resources where they are needed most, when they are needed most. Unrestricted and thoughtfully designed legacy funds allow us to respond to urgent needs, support emerging opportunities, and strengthen the organizations and people shaping our community. The impact of these founding-era funds shows how your generosity transforms vision into action, helping students, women, families, and entire organizations thrive for decades.
As Gulf Coast celebrates 30 years, we are deeply grateful for your trust, your foresight, and your commitment. Together, we are creating a stronger, more resilient community – one gift at a time.
