From Insight to Action: Protecting Our Water and Open Space

Protecting our natural resources takes more than awareness. It requires knowledge, partnership, and action. By working with local governments, experts, and donors, we’re turning insight into real solutions that preserve our land, water, and trails for generations to come.

Our recent Regional Scan confirmed what many of us already feel: growth, water quality, and access to open space are defining issues for our region’s future. In fact, the environment is the only topic that has appeared as a top priority in every Regional Scan we’ve conducted since 2009.

Protecting our natural resources takes more than awareness. It requires knowledge, partnership, and action. By working with local governments, experts, and donors, we’re turning insight into real solutions that preserve our land, water, and trails for generations to come.

Here are several initiatives where your support is driving change:

Environmentally Sensitive Lands & November Ballot Initiative

This November, voters will have the chance to extend Sarasota County’s Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program through a referendum. This initiative would continue funding for the acquisition of parks and conservation lands, ensuring the natural areas that define our region are preserved for generations to come. Learn more about the referendum at Engage Together on 3/11 - see details below.

Protecting Warm Mineral Springs

In partnership with Big Waters Land Trust and the City of North Port, negotiations are underway to secure a 40–60 acre perpetual conservation easement to protect sensitive lands around Warm Mineral Springs Park. Gulf Coast funding is supporting stewardship and habitat restoration to safeguard this environmentally sensitive land for generations.

Advanced Wastewater Treatment

Gulf Coast has been a major supporter of Sarasota County’s wastewater facilities being upgraded to Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) systems. Upgrading to AWT was identified in Gulf Coast’s Water Quality Playbook as one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce nutrient pollution that contributes to Red Tide and other harmful conditions. Jon Thaxton, Director of Policy and Advocacy, recently penned an op ed on the matter for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Expanding the Legacy Trail

Working with Friends of the Legacy Trail and local governments, we are expanding the Legacy Trail to improve connectivity and public access to safe, recreation and transportation. The trail continues to expand into new areas in Sarasota County, including Benderson Park and Lakewood Ranch.

These initiatives are only possible because of donors like you. To continue supporting this important work, you can give directly to Gulf Coast’s Environment Initiative.
