Across our region, residents continue to voice a clear priority: protect the places that shape our environment and our quality of life. The results of the most recent Regional Scan reinforced that message – with 36% of respondents choosing environmental protection as a top priority.
In May 2026, the North Port City Commission took a clear step forward to preserve and protect one of our region’s most unique natural environments, voting 5–0 to support key pieces of a conservation easement for Warm Mineral Springs. The project has taken shape over time through steady local effort, and this unanimous vote marks an important point in moving that work closer to lasting protection.
What Is Warm Mineral Springs?
Warm Mineral Springs is one of the most unique natural places in Florida. Located in North Port, this deep, mineral-rich spring stays warm year-round and has drawn visitors for over 10,000 years seeking relaxation, wellness, and a sense of connection. The Springs and surrounding land are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, reflecting both their archaeological significance and their role in shaping the region’s identity.
Today, protecting and strengthening the future of the full 80-acre park has become a shared priority for the community, Gulf Coast, and key partners. That includes pursuing an Outstanding Florida Springs designation, which could unlock state funding while requiring strong commitments to water quality and infrastructure. Plans are also being explored to restore historic structures on the site.
What Are the Most Recent Developments?
The North Port Commission’s unanimous vote is a big moment. It shows strong support for protecting the Springs and keeps efforts moving forward.
At the center of that work is a conservation easement, a legal agreement that helps protect the land from development while keeping it open for the public to enjoy.
Now, the focus turns to finalizing the details. Gulf Coast continues to work with both Big Waters Land Trust and the City of North Port to agree on finalized terms before presenting final plans to the Commission later this summer.
“Warm Mineral Springs has long been an important part of this community, and it’s something many of us have spent decades working to help protect,” said Jon Thaxton, Gulf Coast’s Director of Policy and Advocacy. “The Commission’s vote reflects careful thought, leadership, and it’s encouraging to see this effort continue to take shape in a meaningful way.”
Who Are the Key Partners in This Effort?
This effort reflects how partners across the region are coming together around a shared responsibility. Gulf Coast continues to work alongside area conservation champions like Big Waters Land Trust, as well as elected officials and city leaders, to stay closely involved as this work continues over time.
“Warm Mineral Springs is a complex project that requires thoughtful coordination at every stage,” said Christine Johnson, President of Big Waters Land Trust. “Working alongside the City of North Port and Gulf Coast brings a strong sense of alignment to that process, and it’s that partnership that helps ensure the work continues to come together in a way that serves the entire community.”
This milestone is an important step, but it’s not the end. Gulf Coast will continue to share updates as progress continues, because the future of places like Warm Mineral Springs is ours to protect.
