Joe Carter, CAP®

Vice President of Philanthropy

Joe Carter brings more than 30 years of experience in higher education and nonprofit fundraising, with deep expertise in major gifts and planned giving. As Vice President of Philanthropy at Gulf Coast Community Foundation, he leads the development of strategic philanthropic plans that align donor intent with the funding objectives of nonprofit organizations and the planning needs of professional advisors.

Prior to joining Gulf Coast, Joe served as Vice President of Development for the Oklahoma City Community Foundation for over twenty years, where he oversaw all development activities of the foundation. His work focused on educating and collaborating with nonprofits, professional advisors, and their clients to structure effective philanthropic plans that advance donors’ charitable goals.

Joe is a past president of the Oklahoma Association of Charitable Gift Planners and Limbs for Life International. He currently serves on the board of the Charitable Gift Planners of Southwest Florida. He is a graduate of the American College’s Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy® (CAP®) program and serves as moderator for the Gulf Coast CAP® cohorts. Most recently, he has been invited to serve as a guest instructor at the Indiana University Lilly School of Philanthropy, teaching planned giving.

Joe earned undergraduate degrees in Finance, Marketing, and Economics from Oklahoma City University, where he attended on a baseball scholarship. He and his wife, Lori, have a 20-year-old son, Jaxon, who is currently an innovative engineering student at the Colorado School of Mines.
